As you know, in recent years, the concept of sustainability has gradually become the focus of the fashion industry. Under this trend, sustainable swimwear has also sprung up on the market. So herewith, as a swimwear industry insider, it’s necessary to learn some knowledge about it.
Sustainable swimwear, compared with traditional swimwear crafted from non-biodegradable synthetic fibres made from petrochemicals, which will pollute the planet and get washed into the ocean, is made using recycled and eco-friendly materials to make an effort to clean up the ocean and planet, reduce the demand for natural resources, create a better future for our community & environment. Every ton of PET produced can reduce 6 tons of air pollution and control oil. A plastic bottle (600cc) equals a carbon reduction of 25.2g, also equals fuel-saving 0.52cc, and equals water-saving 88.6cc.
But, what makes swimwear sustainable? There are three main parts:
1. Recycled and eco-friendly materials
Recycled fabric, is an innovative, sustainable, regeneration, eco-friendly fabric, that can be applied to swimwear and activewear. The yarn is extracted from abandoned fishnets and plastic bottles, through complicated regeneration processes, like cleaned, shredded, blended, melted, extruded and so on.
There are the following recycled/eco-friendly swimwear yarns which are most well-known, that we often used to make fabric and produce OEM swimsuits orders:
ECONYL® – A high-performance, durable yarn, regenerated nylon from Italy Aquafil is created using discarded fishing nets, carpet flooring, industrial plastic and other waste material found in our oceans.
This brand of yarn is the most expensive, and the order procedure is a little complicated that will take a long time to get.
- REPREVE® – A innovative, high-quality yarn, regenerated polyester from Unifi, Inc. (USA) is made from recycled plastic bottles and turns them into usable fibres, which is often referred to as recycled PET or rPET.
The price position of REPREVE® is relatively above the average.
- Shenghong – A Chinese Brand, is the world’s largest regenerated yarn manufacturer. Shenghong’s regenerated polyester yarn from plastic bottles has passed GRS certified, each batch of products has a TC certificate, and there are special identifiers and tracers.
Moreover, the price of this yarn is affordable, and many clients prefer to use this brand’s yarn.
2. Ethical manufacturing practices
The swimwear manufacturers should establish ethical standards in business, employment, production, and sourcing practices. They pay fair wages on time and provide safe and comfortable working conditions to workers.
The swimsuit factory should be passed by GRS certified and each batch of swimwear should have a TC certificate. The ethical production section can manufacture high-quality swimwear using circular or zero waste processes in environmental controls to minimize pollution and reduce greenhouse gases.
3. Low-waste packing and shipping
Ethical swimwear manufacturers pay more attention to reducing single-use packaging and using recyclable or biodegradable packing, so that can be as zero waste as possible. Of course, the cost of recyclable packages is 20-30% higher than the normal packages, but it’s worth protecting the environment.
Therefore, sustainable swimwear is a good fashion way you can choose to protect the environment. To have a new higher quality eco-friendly swimsuit, people can keep it last way longer to get fun at the beach and enjoy swimming.
When you read here, maybe you have the idea that you want to custom your private label brand swimwear made by recycled fabric, but at the same time, you will have a doubt, how I can identify if this swimsuit which you got is real sustainable swimwear or not? Don’t worry.
Let us share with you the following 3 tips to check:
1. Recycled Hang-tag
Your swimwear supplier should offer you the recycled hang tag from the yarn supplier, such as ECONYL®, REPREVE®, Shenghong and so on.
2. GRS Certificate
Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is developed for verifying and tracking the content of recycled materials in the products and applied to the entire supply chain, covering traceability, environmental principles, social requirements, chemical composition and labelling. GRS certificate is a useful mark for customers and consumers to recognize verified recycled products. Moreover, the validity period of the certificate is 1 year. And the certificate can usually be completed in about 3 months.
Your bathing suit supplier should offer you the GRS certificate.
3. TC Certificate
The last most important point, when your swimsuits supplier began to handle your order, they will begin to prepare to apply Transaction Certificate (TC) for textile processed which is a certificate for the circulation of GRS certified products in the supply chain, to ensure the accurate production and trading of GRS certified products.
It will show your order’s fabric information on it. After seeing it, you will ease this batch of swimwear is eco-friendly swimwear.
And herewith, I would like to stress do not forget to show “recycled” or “eco-friendly” words on your label or hangtag. So your consumer can be easy to find that your swimwear is sustainable not just a regular fabric, and believe your sales will be very well.
